Research into a malaria vaccine CoGA study

For several years, the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) is doing research into the development of a malaria vaccine. Malaria is a tropical infectious disease that can be fatal. Every year, many children still die as a result of malaria, especially in Africa. An effective malaria vaccine could prevent many of those deaths. The LUMC has developed the GA2-parasite. The GA2 is an attenuated parasite that cannot cause malaria, but can induce protection (immunity) against malaria. Previous research in the LUMC has shown that administration of the GA2 through mosquito bites is safe. After three immunizations with the GA2, 89% of the participants was protected against a controlled malaria infection. We hope that the GA2 can be used as a vaccine in the future. In the CoGA trial, we want to study how well the GA2 induces protection after one administration. We also want to study if protection increases when we administer other medication simultaneously. These medications are: the BCG vaccine, yellow fever vaccine and imiquimod cream.
