Research into colonisation with non-toxigenic Clostridioides difficile

Infection with the gut bacterium Clostridioides difficile is the most common cause of diarrhoea in the hospital. With the current (antibiotic) treatment the bacterium often comes back. So there is need for new treatments.

The Clostridioides bacterium does not cause diarrhoea to every person, healthy people also carry the bacterium in their gut without experiencing any symptoms (colonisation). This is partially explained by the difference in bacteria which people normally carry in their intestines (the gut flora). More knowledge about which factors in the gut flora give protection and which factors make people susceptible for the Clostridioides bacterium offers possibilities for the development of new treatments against Clostridioides disease. In this study we will use a Clostridioides bacterium which cannot produce toxins, and therefore cannot cause severe diarrhoea; the non-toxigenic Clostridioides difficile.

In this study we will investigate in healthy study subjects which dose of the Clostridioides bacterium is needed to achieve successful colonisation, the safety and tolerability of colonisation with Clostridioides difficile and which factors influence successful colonisation.

 Who are we looking for?

– Healthy people aged 18 to 45 years
