Research on Controlled Hookworm Infection: HiBiSki Study
Hookworm infections are a tropical disease. Worldwide, more than 450 million people are infected with hookworms. There is currently no effective vaccine against hookworm infections. At LUMC, a controlled hookworm infection is being carried out in healthy volunteers to contribute to the rapid development of a vaccine or treatment.
Purpose of the Study
Purpose of the Study
- Primary objective: To investigate the immune response in the skin through two skin biopsies after repeated short-term exposure to hookworms.
- Secondary objective: To infect healthy volunteers with hookworm larvae so they can serve as donors for follow-up studies and to study the immune response to hookworms.
Who Can Participate?
- Healthy individuals aged 18 to 45
- No prior participation in hookworm research
– Already enough participants –
Study Schedule
Participants can choose to join Group A or Group B.
Group A:
Group A:
- Study period: October 14, 2025 to January 12, 2026
- Controlled infections: October 14 and November 4, 2025
- Skin biopsies: November 5, 2025
- Two controlled infections under monitored conditions, followed by treatment two weeks after each infection. The study ends after 13 weeks.
- Study period: October 14, 2025 to September 28, 2027
- Controlled infections: October 14, November 4, and November 18, 2025
- Skin biopsies: November 5, 2025
- Three controlled infections followed by regular check-ups for 16 weeks. After this period, participants become stool donors for the remainder of the study (up to 2 years). Donations will occur 5 to 10 times per year, with dates yet to be determined. After 2 years, donors will receive treatment and two follow-up check-ups.
Compensation
- Group A (non-donors): €1250
- Group B (chronic donors): €2050 plus €50 per stool donation
