Research on a Malaria Vaccine: CoGA-Re Study
At the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), research into the development of a malaria vaccine has been ongoing for several years. Malaria is a tropical infectious disease that can be fatal. Many children still die from malaria each year, particularly in Africa. An effective vaccine could protect these children from the disease.
The LUMC has developed the GA2 parasite. GA2 is a weakened malaria parasite that cannot cause malaria but can induce protection (immunity) against the disease. Previous research at the LUMC has shown that administering GA2 through mosquito bites is safe. After a single immunization with GA2, 90% of participants were protected against a controlled malaria infection. Therefore, we believe GA2 could potentially become a new malaria vaccine.
In the CoGA-Re study, we aim to investigate how long this protection lasts. To do this, we plan to re-expose previous participants to malaria. Additionally, we are looking for a number of new participants to join the control group. These individuals will not receive the vaccination but will be exposed to malaria.
